Lightning - High and Mighty; Fast and Low

Original painting. Oil on canvas.
Not available.

An English Electric (BAe) Lightning F6 pulling 'G' taking the right hand bend in the A5 pass (Ogwen valley) back in 1986.

This is how the Lightning in the 'works in progress' section finally turned out.
I'd really wanted to show an aircraft which actually flew through this pass for real and this was quite tricky to pin down.
Largely due to luck, I fortunately found Captain (in the 1980s, the then 11 Sqn QFI) Ian Hollingworth, who did just this in XS895 and provided a lot of help with all the details.
It did mean I had to change the face in the cockpit, but that was a very small price for the extra accuracy.
This painting took quite a bit longer than I'd intended it to take, mainly due to all of the rocks on the lower slopes of Tryfan, but it was a real labour of love for me. It combined one of my very favourite aircraft with an area I'm very fond of.

I had intended to have this one myself and to hang it above the fireplace, but somewhere along the line, Ian asked if he could have it.
A very, very few limited edition prints were made of this painting which
may no longer be available. If you are interested in one, just use the contact page on the site and I'll pass your details on to Ian.
